The character Maechen was created by Square Soft for the game Final Fantasy X. Yuna's party has the opportunity to meet and speak with Machen at various points and locations. When questioned, he will offer historical facts, legends, and other information about the area or situation. Square gives no indication of his age but the gray haired scholar is stooped with age and one would assume that he is at least over fifty.

Maechen acts as a catylist character in Legendary Guardian. At the behest of Lady High Summoner Yuna, he seeks out the details of Sir Auron's life. In point of fact, you may consider LG as "written" in "his voice." In addition, Maechen also acts as a participatory character in LG, Braska's Journey, and Bonds of Love. Auron, Braska, and Jecht encounter him in various situations and in various locations during the stories in a manner similar to that of Yuna and her party. Additionally, I have authored several "white papers" about the history and workings of Spira. The majority of information is taken from Squaresoft materials, but I have given it all my own little spin and these papers act as background insight for those that read my stories.

As a historian, I have assumed that Maechen would have been temple trained though not an actual priest. He likely has at least some kind of rudimentary fighting and healing skills as he travels alone. However, I have never given him the benefit of a designated weapon. I suspect that Maechen simply travels wisely - in the company of those that can keep him from harm - instead of depending on his own skills to get by. In short, he's a savvy traveler and you'll almost always find him in a shop or near a location where he can buy a potion or pick up a new travel companion.
